Another smashing review, on what seems to be yet another colossal series from Urasawa. The themes in this helping of robotic goodness, seems, like you say, to be similar to that which has been explored a million times before, but even so, the way you have described Pluto seems to suggest that this is something more invigorating and rewarding than your I, Robot conundrum..

So, that's yet another book, due to one of your reviews, that has been added to the list. Maybe to save time I should just write down the ones I don't want instead..

Hi Jixiong -glad you are enjoying the site - thanks!

I did know that Astro is the English translation for Atom, I should have pointed it out perhaps - but I'm not sure that Atom IS Astro as such, Pluto isn't set in the same universe as far as I understand it, it just chooses to use some of the same characters and themes as the original. Either way, it's a fantastic read :)

Stumbled upon your blog recently. Great review! Maybe I'm mistaken but the way you describe Atom, sounds like you don't know that Astro Boy is the translated name for English speaking world whereas Atom is the original name. So please note that Atom IS Astro Boy, not "the Japanese child-robot that is based upon Astro Boy himself." Cheers.

Great review, you hit all the philosophical questions asked and explored in the series. What I find interesting in Japanese sci-fi is that everyone seems to want to be a robot. Even in Pluto you get a sense of robots being the noblier persons, so why be human with all our emotional and psychological baggage.

You're in for a real treat when you get to the fourth and fifth volumes artwise. There is a very neat suprise waiting that will blow you away. Avoid reading reviews of these volumes because most ruin the surprise.
