"Why, oh why." Can't the boy ever get the girl? This is more then depressing! With all of the beautiful imagery in this mini movie, you'd think that there just has to be a happy ending. Don't you?

The you see them passing each other at the train crossing, my question is was this before or after she got married? And if before then why did she disappear? The ending leave a unfinished hole in my emotion center and I didn't like that!

Just for the record - it wasn't *me* making the comparison with Miyazaki - from Wikipedia:

<blockquote>"Shinkai has been called "The New Miyazaki" in several reviews including Anime Advocates and ActiveAnime, though he disagrees with this comparison, stating that "it is an overestimation".</blockquote>

If anything, personally I'd like to see Shinkai-san head in Miyazaki's direction in terms of the variety of different plots and settings the great master has covered...I think, if he does that over the coming years and decades he has the potential to make almost the same impact...

Respectfully, I too disagree the claims that Makoto Shinkai is the new Miyazaki - simply because their narrative styles are just completely different.

For the record, Makoto-san's films are amazingly beautiful, but he relies heavily on narration, while Miyazaki's films, though beautiful too, is very character driven, almost never uses narration, and the background art never take precedence.

At the risk of getting stoned to death by Makoto Shinkai fans, extremely talented as he is, Makoto isn't nearly in the same league as Miyazaki - at least not yet.

@Avery: That links seems to be broken man - shame, i always enjoy reading about Shinkai.

@Parka: Agreed, one of the most sumptuous looking movies of the last few years.

@David: Thanks man! IIRC he was spending some time last year living in London - any idea is he's still there?

Good review! I agree that Shinkai could do better. He'd outdo Miyazaki if he can make films this beautiful, with these universal themes, but with more personality. Maybe taking an international perspective will help him find his voice.

I love this anime movie. The composition and art is just so beautiful. Every frame is worthy of being a painting.

Definitely highly recommended.

I'd disagree with the characterization of Shinkai as the "new Miyazaki", but for a different reason:
