Sadly it had finished it's run at cinemas in Japan before i got over there. I think it's due on DVD/Blu-ray in Japan in February though, so I'm sure some fansubbers will pick it up. So, I guess I can't honestly say for sure that it deserved a nomination...just a gut feeling tells me it was probably better than Kung Fu Panda... To be honest, I haven’t seen it yet. It's just that I worry about the studios having the balls to stump up the sort of cash they need to make large productions. CGI is just so much cheaper these days, and trying to be the new Pixar is so fashionable... And there's no doubt in my mind either that WALL-E deserves the accolade this year. It's a fantastic bit of animation, not just technically but in terms of character and storytelling too. Personally, it's the first thing they've made that can truly stand aside the best output from Ghibli, the studio that influenced Lassiter so much when he founded Pixar. Disney is currently in production on a new Hand drawn 2D film that should be a good one. As an animation student/professional (almost ready to wack of the first part of that title) I can tell you with all honesty that there are huge numbers of people that are really going to add a lot to this industry. From all around the world. In the next few years the U.S., France, and Japan are going to come on extremely strong with some truly innovative work. It has been very fun to be a part of a kind of reconditioning of what animation is and what really makes it interesting. There are a lot of extremely talented and innovative people out there ready to make some fantastic things, just give it a few more years. Animated films could be competing for top film nods not just best animated film, which is still limited to only 3 nominations? There are many other films out there that deserved some recognition, but I would say that the Pixar team definitely deserve the top spot.
