Hi, thank you for the detailed run through of the museum! I'm going there in a few weeks, and am terribly excited. May I know how much time you spent in there? I'll be browsing at a very leisurely pace, so will that take all day, or will I be able to fit something else in the day before heading to Mitaka?

I Lived in Japan for a longtime. Love the country and its people. I recommend you walk from the station. I can guarantee you will enjoy the walk. And with signs along the way, its easy to find.

This takes me back, I loved the ghibli museum, when I was there they showed a short about plannets, which was very good, although a little hard to understand with my limited Japanese.

Hey Kyle,

Thanks for the comments - glad you liked the post/photos ;)

Mitaka and the Museum is really easy to get to from central Tokyo. You can a train on the Chuo/Sobu from Shinjuku JR that takes about 30mins. From the station you can walk (following the signs above!) or jump on the shuttle bus. The Museum is in Inokahira Park, which is worth checking out as well - it's got a really nice zoo and some cool lakes.

More importantly then getting there is getting tickets! Plan ahead - you have to get tickets in advance, as they limit the number of people they admit per day. You can do what I did and buy them through a foreign travel agency before you go, or as you're going to be living in Japan you can buy them at Lawson convenience stores - depending on how good your Japanese is ;)

Lots more information here: http://www.ghibli-museum.jp/en/ticket_information/

Any more questions just let me know - and when you do go it'd be great if you'd come back here and let me know what you thought. I'm hopefully going back there later this year, but am very jealous you're spending a year in Japan...it's a great country...

This was a wonderful find for me. I've been in love with Studio Ghibli films ever since Spirited Away came out my 8th grade year in America.
I'm going to go live in Kyoto for a year starting in September but will spend some time in Tokyo. So if you don't mind me asking, what is the easiest way to get to the museum?
Also, your pictures are quite amazing.

Hey Robynne,

I think you're out of luck, I don't think it's possible to see it anywhere else! Maybe it'll tuen up as an extra on the long awaited Totoro Blu-ray - but I doubt it. Miyazaki-san seems set on making these shorts something that can only be seen at the museum. It is a long way to go to see a 15 min film - but if you do get a chance do it - there is, of course, a lot of other VERY cool things to do in Tokyo...

You're next best bet is the <a href="http://timmaughanbooks.com/2009/01/01/ghibli-museum-shopping-spree/" rel="nofollow">Mei and the Kittenbus picture book</a> I bought at the museum. You should be able to pick a copy of that up online -I suggest trying the ever brilliant <a href="http://halcyonrealms.com/animation/ghibli-museum-anime-shorts-part-ii-mei-and-the-kitten-bus/" rel="nofollow">Halcyon Realms</a>...

Where oh where can I see Mei and the Kitten Bus? Outside of the museum. I'm not quite prepared to go all the way to Japan for to see a 15 minute film!
